Can you paint sling chairs
Spray painting also includes the risk of dripping if there is too much sprayed, any excess paint needs wiping away with a towel or lint cloth. Chances are, if a material as resilient as vinyl needs painting to cover wear and tear, its lost its ability to fulfil its purpose of connecting two pieces of material sufficiently and needs replacing.
If the vinyl strapping is old and worn and not structurally sound in the first place the paint will crack and that will look awful. Also the vinyl needs to retain its supple flexibility to be comfortable to sit on. Paint will only harden your furniture. As the old saying goes If in doubt, throw it out! Save yourself the bother of messy unfinished paint cans taking up space in your garage for years to come, a neatly coiled roll of vinyl strapping is no bother to anyone, or you could buy the exact amount pre-cut and save space entirely!
Overall, for less mess, fuss and no hidden extra expenses, you'll get a more professional finish by replacing the straps all together. You need a smooth, clean surface for painting, otherwise you will end up with an unattractively bumpy texture, or the new paint may simply not stick. A drop cloth is a good idea if you want to protect your pavers.
To prep your metal furniture for painting, you will need a wire brush and a range of sandpapers in different levels of grit. Start by giving the furniture a good scrub with the wire brush. The mesh portions of the furniture are harder to prepare for painting, but the bristles of the brush should fit neatly into the little gaps.
The brush is to remove any flaking bits of paint, rusty flakes, and general dirt, dust and debris before you get sanding. Next, create a smooth surface for painting using the sandpaper. You can use a palm sander on larger areas; however smaller and more fiddly portions can be easier to hand sand. Give the furniture a good brush down to remove fragments and dust.
Let dry and then repeat. I absolutely love using the Chevron pattern by Frog Tape because it makes creating a Chevron pattern so easy. People always ask me how I get a perfect chevron pattern and I always share my secret…the tape makes the difference! Once the Chevron Frog Tape was placed where I wanted it…I went back over the tape to make sure that the tape was adhered properly. If you look on the bottom of the chair you can see the piece of tape is raised.
If it remains raised the paint will bleed under and the chevron pattern will not be executed. This is a very important step, be sure to take your time!
Let dry and Repeat one more time. Carefully remove the chevron tape to expose the beautiful chevron pattern you have created…Voila! Here is the chair sitting out in front of my shop…I love it so much I hate to take it home. Update: My family used this set for the entire season and I was not able to store it inside so it stayed outside all winter. It is now spring and it has held up perfectly! My husband gave it a good washing and I put on a fresh coat of Rustoleum Clear Matte Sealer for UV protection to get it ready for this summer.
By taking a moment to update the UV sealer each year this set is going to last at least another 10 years. Feel free to share with me on Instagram , Twitter or Facebook. Comments I had some chairs that were almost identical to these, but I got rid of them - now I wish I still had them because I love this transformation! Thanks for linking at Talented Tuesday! This has been one of my favorite projects so far this year. Everyone has tired outdoor furniture especially after the winter we had.
Why not make them pretty again!??! I love your diy project. I have some rockers on my porch that need some love, but I had no idea what to do with them other than just repaint them white. Thanks for the inspiration! Will pin for later! Leanne, what a fabulous idea! I have an old patio set that takes the fun right out of functional. Thanks for testing it out! It looks great! I tend to go crazy with spray paint too. Thankfully it's not expensive!
I love the new dark look on your chair. I'm sure when the rest of the set is finished it will look fabulous all together. Don't you love spray paint! I would not have thought to spray the fabric too. Genius and so pretty! Super save my friend:.
I think you're right, that was a win-win!!! Chair looks great and how nice not to have to mess with the fabric again!
Good Job! The Rustoleum ORB paint is one of my favorites as well. It did wonders for your chair and I'm sure you will love it even more when you finish the entire set! What a great save! I updated my glider rocker in the front and my outdoor patio set in the back the same way at the beginning of the Summer and they look brand new! Spray paint is magical, and I commend you for even trying to replace the fabric!
Kathy, My table matches your chair. Great minds think alike. I love the paint you chose too. I would love to share a ice cold glass of lemonade with you this summer sitting in your freshly painted chair.
Happy Creating Darlin', Karen Marie. It does match. I have to paint my table now. It's a large round one. It will go easy Looks like a new chair! Love it! It is always fun to see how much a little paint can transform something! I used to have chairs similar to that and gave them to my son. I'm definitely showing him how he can refresh them in a new color that works better with his new house.
They don't make them like that anymore so it's worth the refresh rather than replacing them. Gotta love Rust-oleum spray paint - it's my go-to paint as well!
I have done the same to my glider swing and patio furniture and it lasts for years. Cheap and easy fixes are the best!
